Choosing Gifts with GiftChooser

Posted in Other at 7:11 pm by Lee

present.jpgOnce again it’s not long till Christmas (I give it a matter of weeks before things start appearing in shops), which means even less time to think of gift ideas. Not only for my family but also friends, including new friends which I hope to make at Uni. But each year, I have the same problems with coming up with ideas for presents. However, it’s not just Christmas but birthdays too and I almost always end up defaulting to gift vouchers or chocolate.

Although I can sometimes use friends to help me to come up with ideas, a site the can suggest gift ideas would be fantastic and a site the does this is giftchooser.co.uk & even better, it’s UK based!

The site has different categories of gifts it has reviewed, from Christmas ideas, to those for boys or unusual gifts. Plus my favourite category – cheap gifts. When you have a lot of gifts to buy & you’re on a student budget you need them to be cheap!

Also as the site is in blog style, you can subscribe to their RSS feed to receive more gift ideas as they add them.

Giftchooser.co.uk doesn’t sell the gifts direct, instead they link to various sites around the web where they’ve found these gifts, often allowing you to find ideas at sites which you may have shopped at before & have had a pleasant experience with, but not seen the item which giftchooser have highlighted.

Run, Fatboy, Run! Trailer

Posted in Other, Videos at 8:43 am by Lee

Last night I was at the cinema and caught the new Run Fat Boy Run teaser starring Simon Pegg. It made me & all my friends laugh – which is always a good sign – especially for a British Comedy!

I think the main draw for this film is going to be Simon Pegg after his success with Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz – it’s probably one of the main reason I’d head to see it.

Incase you haven’t seen it yet, here is the trailer for Run Fat Boy Run. Just, why did they have to make those shorts so small & tight! Urgh!

Haunted Mansion Closure Poll Results

Posted in Disney, Other at 11:06 pm by Lee

One of the big refurbishments happening at Disney World currently is at The Haunted Mansion.

But was during the busy summer period the ideal time to close it? We asked you this question and these were the results:
hauntedmansionpollresults.gif

It looks like most people did feel that it was the ideal time to make the changes. Now we just need to wait for the Haunted Mansion to re-open. I will of course make more posts as more details come through.

Previous posts about the Haunted Mansion are:
18th June 2007 – Haunted Mansion Closed For Refurbishment
25th July 2007 – Details About Haunted Mansion Updates Emerge

You can join in my current poll by voting using the panel on the right hand side.
I’m currently asking what should have Disney’s MGM Studios been re-named too?

Follow the link to the story about Disney’s MGM Studios Being Re-named and why not make a comment if you have another idea for a name?

PokerStars on a Mac

Posted in Other at 10:37 pm by Lee

pokerstars.jpgPokerstars is the world’s largest online poker site, with weekly tournaments exceeding a million pounds. Fantastic news for all the PC users, but not if you use a Mac.

There is some good news though, the Mac PokerStars version has been being developed for the past year and will shortly be released.

Although the final version is not yet available, alpha and beta releases have been made available to some users. The menus appear to contain the same features as the PC version, whilst still being able to run as smoothly as you would expect an application on a Mac to run.

Following is a screenshot of the Mac version of the software:

pokermac.jpg

Visit PokerOnAMac for more Mac PokerStars screenshots.

Also, as recommended by the site, let PokerStars know how much you want a mac version – not only will it make them feel better but should act as some encouragement to help finish the software.

I think it’s a good time for everyone to show their support for a Mac version of Pokerstars. They’ve had a mac beta version in progress, but it’s been out for a year now and coming along slllooowwwwly. The problem, I believe, is that there just aren’t enough players emailing PokerStars and requesting a Mac version. They need some motivation!

If everyone just takes a few minutes to email PokerStars Support to show their support for a Mac version, there’s a good chance they’ll listen to us and get the ball rolling on the development. Maybe we’ll even get them to finish the Mac version before this years WCOOP event in september – be sure to include that in your email!

Fun Facts About Orlando

Posted in Other at 6:52 pm by Lee

orlandoescape.gif
Orlando is one of my favourite places to visit on holiday and is one of the places I have frequented the most.
For me this is largely due to the draw of the theme parks there. In my opinion they’re some of the best in the world and that’s why I love going there.
The theme parks such as Disney & Universal is probably also what most other people think of when they think of Orlando, however, here’s 10 facts that you may not know:

1.According to Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s 2006 Travel Trends Survey, Orlando is the second most popular domestic travel destination in the country (Las Vegas placed first).

2.Out of the estimated 50 million tourists who visit Orlando each year, over 2 million are international visitors, with the majority of foreign tourists coming from the United Kingdom.

3.There are now 20,000 to 25,000 rental properties in Central Florida, mostly located near the theme parks.

4.The official nickname of the city of Orlando is “The City Beautiful,” although it is also known as “O-Town.”

5.Ever wonder why there are so many Olive Gardens and Red Lobsters in town? Orlando is the corporate headquarters of Darden Restaurants, which also runs the Bahama Breeze, Smokey Bones, and Seasons 52 restaurants.

6.Even though few people outside of Florida knew where Orlando was before Walt Disney World opened in 1971, the city of Orlando had been around for more than century before that; it was incorporated in 1875.

7.Orlando is the county seat of Orange County, Florida, although the vast citrus groves for which the county was named no longer exist.

8.Before there was Disney, there was also a considerable amount of cattle ranching in Central Florida; you can still see cattle grazing along certain stretches of the 417 GreeneWay Expressway.

9.Although many of Orlando’s citizens (especially the most famous ones) are originally from somewhere else, there are a few celebrities who were born and raised in Orlando, including Wayne Brady and Delta Burke.

10.Beat generation icon Jack Kerouac lived in the College Park neighborhood of Orlando during the time his novel On the Road was published in 1957.

Merchant Circle – Business Promotion

Posted in Other at 1:42 pm by Lee

merchantcircle.gifMerchant circle can be quite simply described as a myspace for businesses, or a more developed business directory on the internet.

merchantcirclepage.gif

It allows businesses to set up their own collection of pages within their directory, in a way similar to myspace. They can create a general information page, have a map to where their business is, share coupon codes, newsletters, create a business blog amongst other things.

For businesses this is great as it offers a very nice way of getting the word out about your business. For consumers it is also good as they can find a lot of information that they want to know in one place.

There is also a merchant circle forum, a place where business owners can trade ideas and network with customers.
For example, there is a thread asking about how to make a news release. Different business owners who may have completed these before are then able to come in and offer advice to other businesses about the best way to go about it and what lessons they have learnt from doing a press release.
