No Major New Attraction in 2007

Posted in Tech From The Net at 7:11 pm by Lee

As things currently stand, there will definitely be no new roller coaster next year, and most likely no major new attraction either.ATA has learnt that the rumoured water ride for next year is based on rough future plans drawn up some time ago, which have since changed. Although the park have not ruled out ever installing a new water ride (bear in mind the park’s future plans change week-by-week), they have confirmed that there will be no major new ride for 2007.

Alton Towers Almanac

It’s a shame that nothing new will be appearing, however over the last few years there has been a fair bit of development at alton towers in the way of new rides.

Perhaps it is about time they had a year off (although they are opening a new kids ride this summer) and used the off-season time to improve existing parts of the park – painting etc.

Although the new rides are helping re-develop areas like cred street, places like around Oblivion need a lick of paint to keep them smart

Microsoft ‘facing huge EU fine’

Posted in Tech From The Net, microsoft at 9:20 am by Lee

microsoft windowsThe European Commission is preparing to impose a fine of between 200m euros and 300m euros ($383.2m; £207.6m) on Microsoft to punish it for failing to comply with an anti-competition ruling.
The suggested 300m euro fine is thought to be backdated to a warning issued to the firm in December.

At the time Brussels warned it would face daily fines of 2m euros a day if it failed to meet the Commission’s demands.
Sources say that penalty could now rise to 3m euros a day if Microsoft fails to comply with the anti-trust ruling by 31 July.

Under the 2004 ruling, Microsoft was told to provide rival firms with more information about its software, in order to enable them to write programs that could run more smoothly on Microsoft’s widely-used Windows operating system.

New in Gmail: Apply Filters To Old Emails

Posted in Tech From The Net at 12:20 pm by Lee

Until now, Gmail allowed users to set filters only for the future emails. Now when you create a filter or update one, Gmail allows you to apply it to old emails, a fantastic feature if you’ve already received a lot of one type of email and have only just decided to group them.
Also added is a link to delete all spam, however, only some users have access to both of these features yet in google’s typical roll-out method. Hopefully it wont be long until everyone sees them.

Google to stay focused on search

Posted in Tech From The Net at 11:31 am by Lee

Online search is not a “solved problem”, a senior executive for net giant Google has told BBC News.
“Our position is that search is a very hard problem. We have still a lot of work to do,” said Douglas Merrill, who looks after internal engineering.
Mr Merrill said Google’s search focus for the future included better search for mobiles, personalised search, language translation, accessing offline information and defeating web spam.

Hopefully as a result of this we will be seeing some better spidering and seeing new sites getting featured a lot quicker. Improved accuracy in google searches will be a great advancement.
