BBC web downloads set to Launch

Posted in Tech From The Net at 10:56 pm by Lee

The BBC’s on demand TV service, the BBC iPlayer, will launch to the public on 27 July, the corporation has revealed.

UK users will be able to download popular shows over the net seven days after broadcast to watch on their PC.

Later this year, the service will also be available via links from YouTube and could also appear on other websites such as MSN, Bebo, and Facebook.

At launch the application will only work on Windows PCs but a version for the Mac could be available by autumn.

Over time other features will be added to the iPlayer including live streaming of programmes, the BBC Radio Player and “series stacking”, which will allow users to download episodes from series retrospectively.

BBC NEWS | Technology | BBC web downloads set to launch

I personally can’t wait to have this launched. Im a huge fan of the channel 4 equivalent – 4OD and have found it highly useful to catch up on programs I’ve missed, as well as the ability to set a series to automatically download.

As I’m not a mac user the delay doesn’t concern me, however, I can understand how frustrating it must be for them and I’m pleased to hear that the BBC are working on a version for them.

Connect Your Neighbourhood With Qwixo

Posted in Tech From The Net at 10:51 pm by Lee

qwixo.gifEveryone loves to social network. It seems to be highly popular in the younger generations and spreading to the older ones.
You have some sites the focus on the social networking such as myspace, and others that integrate it in order to enhance another service.

Qwixo.com is a social networking site that aims to connects it’s members into their neighbourhoods using their zip codes. It enables you to run things on a local level which is good as you can find out things that affect you. As well as this, you’re able to buy and sell things in a local area to yourself so you don’t need to go off mailing or travelling long distances to collect things.

Qwixo themselves say:

Qwixo is for the veterinarian practice wanting to offer a new service to customers just as much as it’s for the college student who wants to make side money teaching piano lessons. Talk about local politics and news or just find out which store has a deal on a lawnmower. Think of Qwixo as your local bulletin board.

I think for qwixo to work, they really need to make sure they get the numbers up for each community – you don’t want to be the only one buying and selling in your neighbourhood! As long as there are enough members within a neighbourhood though, I can see it being quite easy to use and achieve its purpose. However, it will be interesting to see how many people sign up for yet another social network.

Girl dies on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

Posted in Disney, Theme Parks at 10:45 pm by Lee

French police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Spanish girl who lost consciousness while riding a roller coaster at Disneyland Paris, park officials said on Tuesday.

The cause of the girl’s death remained unclear. A preliminary inspection of the Rock’n'Roller Coaster ride found no malfunctions with the machinery, said Disneyland spokesperson Pieter Boterman.

The girl boarded the ride on Monday at the theme park in Marne-la-Vallee east of the French capital, and when the ride stopped, her friends found her unconscious, Boterman said.

Medical teams at the theme park tried to revive her, but by the time the ambulance arrived, the girl had died, he said.

Girl dies on Disney ride: World: News: News24

Although its always awful to hear of accidents at a theme park, there is a small piece of good news with this one – it wasn’t a malfunction with the ride.

Until the exact reason for death is known, it’s hard to know whether the ride is partially to blame, but as there seems to be more serious accidents at Disney appearing in the news more frequently, it’s good to hear when it isnt the ride to blame. Riders have also got to accept some responsibilty, although problems occur when they suffer from symptoms triggered by the ride which they were not aware about.

Start Your Business Idea

Posted in Other at 10:35 pm by Lee

chadssnazzylogo.gifI’m sure many of us have had an idea in the past that we have thought would make a good business idea. However, very few of us have probably followed these ideas up and turned them into a business.

One of the reasons why we may decide not to do so is trouble raising finance to fund the business when first starting up.

One of the methods of raising money either to start or grow a business is via a commercial loan. CEM Lending offer a commercial hard money lender program that is structured around a client’s individual needs.

They concentrate on keeping the turnaround times short so you can get the loans for when you need it.

It works as follows:

Fill out a short, 3-step application and click submit; a hard money lender specialist will contact you directly at a time you specify with straight forward answers to all your questions and a list of all feasible options for your circumstances. Decide which program is best and we handle the rest. We deal directly with lenders so you don’t have to. This simple process is how we get an edge over competitors, and have more satisfied clients.

Yahoo sees advertising shake-up

Posted in Tech From The Net at 5:39 pm by Lee

Yahoo is overhauling the way it sells advertising in the US in an effort to help revive the business.

The internet firm, whose boss Terry Semel quit this month after recent poor trading, is merging its display and web search advertising operations.

The firm’s most senior US advertising executive has also left the business.

Hugely reliant on advertising for its revenues, Yahoo said the shake-up would better position it to sell ads across different formats.

BBC NEWS | Business | Yahoo sees advertising shake-up

Yahoo really need to do some catching up fast. They have some cool things like flickr, but they need to make the most of all of their aquisitions.

As for the advertising, they’re got some very steep competition. How it’s overhauled and what benefits this means for the publishers and advertisers is going to affect whether they’ll be able to catch up and how quickly they do it.

Revision3 Raises $8 million From Greylock

Posted in Tech From The Net at 6:59 pm by Lee

Online video site Revision3 has raised an $8 million second round of financing, according to a source close to the deal, bringing the total capital raised to $9 million. Our understanding is that Greylock led the round. Greylock was also the primary investor in Revision3’s $1 million first round of financing. News startup Digg, which shares founders Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson with Revision3, also raised money twice from Greylock.

Revision3 now has exclusive rights to ten shows and is continuing to add more talent over time. Diggnation, however, is by far the largest and most popular. Revenue is generated via integrated advertising, where the show hosts discuss the advertised products directly.

Revision3 Raises $8 million From Greylock

I’m a big fan of a large number of Revision 3 shows – but they’re not without their problems. They still need to get into a procedure of regularly releasing new shows at the same time and same frequency – some are just a bit too random, though I suppose that’s what RSS is for.

As for the $8 million it will be interesting to see what happens with it. They have advertising within shows, but as no advertising expert whether that covers their costs I don’t know. I can imagine quite a large bandwidth bill. If it isn’t being covered, I think they need to address this rather than keep burning capital.
