Technology: Tweetie
by Lee on Feb.23, 2009, under Technology
I’ve been using Twitter more and more recently and apart from my desktop client, the main place I use twitter is on my iPod touch. I’ve gone through a few iPhone apps including Twinkle, the free version of Twitterific and most recently Tweetie.
So far, it is the best twitter app I’ve used – largely because it has all the functionality I need there, but whilst still keeping everything simple.
The main list of all the received twitter updates can take one of two formats. Either a classic list, or an iChat style list:

The nice thing about viewing the tweets is that when you close the application, then later open it, it returns to the position you were in the list when you closed it. This allows you to see the most recent posts that have been made, then when you do finally reach the top of the list, there is a nice refresh button to see if there are any new posts that have recently been made.
As per a lot of twitter applications, you are also able to filter off your @replies and direct messages, for ease of reading. It also offers easy shortcuts (such as swiping across a tweet), to reply, send a message or make a tweet a favourite)

Other features that tweetie has includes a list of the current trends being discussed on twitter. I find this ideal for when I’ve read all the updates from people I’m following and I’m looking for a discussion to join in on. Using this I have also found new people to follow – all of which I can do from the application itself.

It’s also interesting to look at posts made by those nearby. It seems to give me better results than Twinkle does, despite using similar technology to pick up your location (not quite as accurate on my iPod touch). You are also able to change the distance which you feel to be ‘nearby’.

As an application itself, I have generally found it very reliable and can only remember suffering from a couple of crashes whilst using it. I had a lot worse of an experience when I first started using the free version of twitterific.

Google doesn’t have a twitter deal and isn’t an involved party at all.
It will be interesting to see how Twitter does monetise its service though.
